Common questions
- How is a WorkSafeBC or WCB premium calculated?
- Your board assigns your business to an industry classification with a rate per $100 of assessable payroll. The premium is your assessable payroll multiplied by that rate and divided by 100. Each worker's earnings only count up to the yearly maximum.
- What is the maximum assessable payroll per worker in 2026?
- $127,500 with WorkSafeBC, $171,500 with WCB Manitoba and $108,223 with WCB Saskatchewan. Earnings above those amounts aren't charged a premium.
- Why might my actual premium be different?
- Boards adjust individual employers' rates up or down based on their own claims history, and minimum premiums can apply. Manitoba's figures are its published rates for new businesses. Your board account shows your exact rate.
- Does workers' comp replace liability insurance?
- No. Workers' compensation covers your own workers' injuries. Commercial general liability covers injuries to other people and damage to their property, which clients and general contractors usually require separately.
